Product Description: This offering is for a new-old-stock Shimano 600/Ultegra hubset (model HB-6400/FH-6402). It's an mid 90's hubset with specs that are becoming increasingly difficult to find in today's market (and this includes the freehub spacing and a respectable list of cassette compatibility options). Detailed specifications include the following... Hole count (front/rear): 36H / 36H Locknut dimensions (front/rear): 100 mm / 130 mm Cluster compatibility (rear): 7/8-speed (non Dura-Ace) UniGlide cassette or 7/8/9-speed HyperGlide cassette (although, refer to discussion that follows for added spacer requirement to retrofit a 7-speed HyperGlide cassette) Axle type (front and rear): hollow type with matching quick release skewers Weight (front and rear): 636 grams Other specifications: For those that want to know the specific hub body length (or said another way...the length of the splines on the hub body), we measure them to be 35 mm...and this includes a 7 mm external threaded section for either a 7 or 8-speed (non Dura-Ace) UniGlide cassette. As most understand, an 8/9-speed HyperGlide cassette will utilize the internal threads also present on this hub body...so the threads located on the underside of the visible UniGlide threads. As for the 7-speed HyperGlide cassette option, this will require an additional 4.5 mm spacer (sold separately) to be mounted first...before a 7-speed HyperGlide unit will mount correctly. We want to confirm the freehub body is the fairly desirable hybrid (Uniglide/HyperGlide) model that will accommodate a 7/8-speed UniGlide cassettes or a 7/8/9-speed HyperGlide cassette (although, stay away from Dura-Ace UniGlide cassettes, as they will not mount on this freehub, but all other Shimano UniGlide 7/8-speed cassettes should mount fine). One other note on compatibility...the HyperGlide hub body design on this freehub is of the non compact variety, so the smallest HyperGlide sprocket that will mount on this hub body is a 12T sprocket (so avoid the 7/8/9-speed HyperGlide cassettes with an 11T high gear). The finish is the traditional polished silver found on 600/Ultegra components (and note the center section on these hubs still includes the tri-color label/logo common on this component group through most of the 90's). Shimano literature further indicates this model hubset has a one-pieced forged aluminum alloy design...so a very strong and durable offering that should hold up well under stressful conditions. This same reference material also indicates the cup-n-cone bearing design is enhanced to include some sealing properties that should help reduce internal wear. Now I will be the first to admit these sealing properties are not on par with more current cartridge bearing designs, but I believe Shimano's claim still holds some merit. With respect to condition, the hubset is new and unused (and never been laced). I see some shopwear (scuffs and scratches) in the silver finish, but the overall condition is still fairly nice. We have very few of these (or similar) hubsets left in stock and while we are hopeful to find more of them (or other Shimano model hubsets with similar specs), we are coming to the realization that such new-old-stock hubsets are becoming harder to source.
