Formed in 1964, the free-jazz ensemble New York Art Quartet comprises bassist Lewis Worrell, drummer Milford Graves, saxophonist John Tchicai, and trombonist Roswell Rudd. This self-titled disc was recorded in 1964, one of the first releases on the landmark ESP label, and was re-released on CD in 1993. The NYAQ was one of the first groups to forge the collective avant improvisation that would typify 1970s collectives like the Chicago Art Ensemble. Their eponymous debut epitomizes the approach, offering up a clattering, keening sound that searches and seeks while evoking colors, shapes, and patterns in the listener's mind. A collaboration with poet Amiri Baraka on "Sweet--Black Dada Nihilismus" is an added bonus. An overlooked avant jazz gem, NEW YORK ART QUARTET is a must for fans of the genre.
