In the year 274, the winter solstice fell on 25 December. The Emperor Aurelian decreed that the Natalis Solis Invicti, the Roman sun festival would be held on that date every year instead of changing date. Early Christians, who in those days worshiped in secret to avoid persecution could not celebrate the birth of Jesus in the open began celebrating it on the 25th to blend in with this Roman celebration.
