Grouping of General Lyman Louis Lemnitzer, U.S. Army, including a terrific glossy photo of General Lemnitzer (7.75″ x 9.5″ approx.), his Hardcover book LEMNITZER A Soldier for His Time, by L. James Binder and one of General Lemnitzer’s US Flags that was acquired from Alderfer Auction’s with provenance to the General.The flag is 48 star, marked “Phil. Quartermaster Depot Inspected By FEB 14 1952″, measures approx. 52″ x 40″ in total length and width (to include yellow fringe). The photo is 7.75″ x 9.375″ and mounted to an 11″ x 14” thick mounting board and is in good condition with minor marks on the photo and backing board. The book is in excellent condition; First Edition, Hardcover with Dust Jacket, corners and spine are like new, there is a few areas of smudging on the outside face of the pages and on the inside cover, otherwise the pages are in excellent condition. The last image is a document of how and when the items were acquired together. General Lyman L. Lemnitzer graduated from U.S. Military Academy at West Point in 1920.His pre-World War II assignments include the coastal artillery unit in Rhode Island, transferred to Corregidor in the Philippine Islands, was a West Point USMA instructor and attended the Command & General Staff School as well as the Army War College.In June 1942 Lemnitzer was promoted to Brigadier General and given command of the 34th anti-aircraft brigade. He was shortly appointed the Assistant Chief of Staff of the Allied Forces Headquarters in London, England under General Dwight D. Eisenhower. It was in this capacity that Lemnitzer was one of several officers responsible for implementation of operation TORCH, the allied invasion of North Africa.Lemnitzer was promoted to Major General in 1944. In 1945 Lemnitzer was instrumental in the surrender negotiations of German forces in Italy and sections of Austria.In 1950 General Lemnitzer was given command of the 11th Airborne Division, 1951 was assigned to the command of the 7th Infantry Division in Korea, promoted to Lieutenant General in 1952, and was promoted to Four-Star General in 1955.He assumed command of the U.S. Army Forces Far East Command and U.S. 8th Army, eventually becoming Commander in Chief, Far East United Nations Command.From 1959-1960 he was appointed the Chief of Staff of the United States Army.
