Art Ensemble members Nicole Mitchell (compositions, flute) and Tomeka Reid (cello) are joined here by vocalist Fay Victor and pianist Aruán Ortiz for a drumless jazz quartet that - like all AACM-affiliated music - explores wide ranges of music, but never becomes the chamber quartet that the instrumentation might lead one to believe. It's also never just a trio backing vocalist Victor, who contributes powerful vocals in several styles but never shies away from the opportunity to follow the rest of the group when they begin to incorporate their more avant-garde leanings, joining in with wordless vocals, screams, and glossolalia. The kinship of Mitchell and Reid playing off each other is at the core, but the rhythmic and harmonic support of Ortiz plus Victor's contributions make this a great quartet worth listening to.
