He is a prolific and influential poet and editor, having published more than 20 books of poetry, having edited and published the literary magazine Statements, having edited poetry for the North American Review and The Iowa Review, while also teaching for 40 years for the Iowa Writers' Workshop, holding visiting lectureships at numerous universities, and serving two terms as Iowa's First Poet Laureate.
