Description: Nippon Cup & SaucerRising Sun Hand Painted Pink Flowers Branch Gold 1911-1918 A beautiful NIPPON Cup & Saucer with PINK Flowering Branches & GOLD 1911-1918 Rising Sun Mark Morimura Bros. formed the trading and decorating company in 1876 which evolved into Noritake. Noritake Company has a rich history of producing fine bone china all the way from January 1, 1904 when the Nippon Toki Kaisha Ltd - the forerunner to the present Noritake Company - was formed in the village of Noritake, a small suburb near Nagoya, Japan. The first reported U.S. registry for a Noritake backstamp for importing is 1911. In Collecting Noritake A to Z Art Deco & More, David Spain shows that Noritake substituted Japan for Nippon in their backstamps starting in 1918. The Rising Sun Mark is attributed to Noritake and its forerunner in the 1890’s to 1921 time period. In ABC’s of Collecting Nippon Porcelain, Van Patten attributes the Rising Sun’s mark to since 1911. This seems to narrow the window of use for the Rising Sun mark to 1911-1918. The condition of this cup & saucer set is excellent. We can find no defects or damage. There are no chips, nicks, cracks or hairlines. The gold appears to be very nice--highlighting the smooth rims and the base of the cup. The solid gold handle has a small amount of wear on the base of the handle. This is not evident unless you turn the cup upside down. Surprisingly, the rest of the beautiful goldwork appears to have no damage. On the saucer, there is one small spot which appears dark which must be a smudge of the paint used to paint the dark green leaves. The saucer has a diameter of 5 1/2" and stands 7/8" high. The diameter of the cup is 3 9/16" and its height is 2 1/8". Both ping nicely when tapped. Please view all pictures carefully as they are part of the description.
