Description: 1 sleeve of 5 new General Electric NOS 12AT7/ECC81 vacuum tubes. Code on tube: ED 188-5.These are some of the finest phase inverters and reverb driver for Fender style amps. These were original equipment in many of the blackface and silverface era Fender amps. These 12AT7's, when used in the first gain stage, will provide increased headroom, and more of your amps distortion will be developed in the output stage rather than the preamp stage, ala Stevie Ray Vaughan. The 12AT7 has a spec'd current drive ability of 10.0 mA versus 1.2mA of a 12AX7in the same circuit at 250 plate volts and a -2 volt bias. This makes them very nice for for newer amps that use 12AX7's in the phase inverter or driver position. The reason that many amp folks use 12AX7's in all positions today is an issue of cost and part stocking. The original Fender amps used 12AT7's for the Reverb driver and phase inverter. The GE's in some circles are considered even nicer than the JAN Philips, hence are a bit higher in price. The GE 6L6, 6CA7 and 6550A were considered by many to be the best examples of their respective power tubes.
