Now Sing We Joyfully Christian Shawnee Choir Vinyl LP Record & Music Book VG+ Record Grade per Goldmine Standard: VG+; Includes book of complete musical scores THE PURPOSEThe idea behind the Shawnee Press Reference Recording Service is: to make it possible for choir directors to judge—quickly and accurately—whether new and unfamiliar music is suitable in all respects for their choirs. All trained musicians know how difficult and time-consuming it is to study a new piece of music from the score alone.Hearing the music performed speeds up the study process tremendously. And hearing the music while looking at the scoreis the fastest possible way to make an accurate evaluation. And—because it is the purpose of Shawnee Press to find and publish new music that is useful to choir directors—we haveprepared this series of record albums with complete musical scores to make it possible for directors to see and hear themusic together. Before issuing the first album in 1955, we played the recordings for hundreds of choir directors. They were highly enthusiastic about the value of records in evaluating choir music. Also, many of them said that they'd like to use the recordings as rehearsal aids with their choirs, to let the choir helpin the selection of new music, and to give the choir an overall picture of the choral sound of the music.During these years of continuing and increasing acceptance of the idea by choral directors, we have added steadily tothe series of record albums, producing literally hundreds of recordings of new and unfamiliar choral repertory. We arepleased to report the enthusiastic endorsement of this program by thousands of choral directors. For a complete catalog of all the available Shawnee Press Reference Recording albums and their contents, write to:Shawnee Press, Inc., Delaware Water Gap, Pa.THE SHAWNEE CHOIRThe Shawnee Choir was organized in 1955 for the purpose ofrecording Shawnee Press publications. In that year 23 volunteerchoristers recorded 18 anthems which were released in an LPalbum titled SING UNTO THE LORD and made available as aShawnee Press Reference Recording to church and schooldirectors of choral music. The Shawnee Choir has continued its unique recording activityand has expanded to 30 active members. Due to inevitableschedule conflicts, family obligations, out-of-town travel, etc.,the average attendance for weekly recording sessions is 24.Jn the Shawnee Choir are 9 teachers, a telephone operator,3 secretaries, a radio commentator, chief clerk of a selectiveservice board, 3 organist-choir directors, 3 full-time housewives,a minister, 2 department store managers, a laboratory techni-cian engaged in the production of vaccines, 4 individuals invarious phases of the music publishing business, a purchasingagent for a manufacturing concern, and an insurance adjuster. With each member the Shawnee Choir is an “after work” activity.THE MUSICAL DIRECTORSince its inception, the director of The Shawnee Choir hasbeen Dr. Earl Willhoite. As a school teacher, church choir director, choral clinician, and guest conductor of music festivals in Canada and 28 statesfrom Alaska to Florida, California to New Hampshire, Dr. Will-hoite has achieved consistently superior results.Following his five-year term of wartime military service, whichhe entered as a sergeant and left as a major in the field artillery,Dr. Willhoite joined Fred Waring's “Pennsylvanians.” His firstassignment was balancing the sound in the Audio Control Cen-ter during the weekly CBS-TV Fred Waring Show, which heused as background in his doctoral dissertation at ColumbiaTeachers College.Dr. Willhoite is presently Educational Director for ShawneePress, where he has conducted the more than 400 choral selec-tions that are available on Shawnee Press Reference Recordingalbums. lp2936
