Description: Ocean Avenue Acoustic is an acoustic reinterpretation by Yellowcard of their fourth album, Ocean Avenue (2003) released on its 10th anniversary. There are many people out there who can remember the release of Ocean Avenue 10 years ago. For me, it came right as high school was right around the bend. The album fit perfectly with that time period of my life, and was played for the next couple years. Not only did it address a lot of thoughts and concerns I was having at the time, but it also had this coming-of-age greatness to it. It was certainly one of the finest releases at the time, and it served many well. As much as the violin aspect appealed to me, it was definitely the lyrics of tracks like “Way Away” (“How it feels to be alone and not believe anything”), “Empty Apartment” (“Shot me down as I flew by, crash and burn, I think sometimes we forget where the heart is”), and “Miles Apart” (“I may be leaving, but you’re always in my heart”), that won me over more than anything with the record. Ryan Key wrote some profound words throughout this record, so it was great hearing them all over again. In 2011, the band released an album titled When You’re Through Thinking, Say Yes, and it was the closest work Yellowcard had come to anything like Ocean Avenue, in the sense that it had that “lost innocence” feel to it (something their other albums have not been able to truly re-capture over the years). Not only did When You’re Through Thinking… have a similar approach as that classic album, it was also followed by an acoustic version of itself soon after, which was even better than the original. So, upon hearing that Yellowcard would be doing the same with their Ocean Avenue record, I was very much excited to hear the final product. These songs sure do bring back a lot of memories, urging the listener to dig out their original Ocean Avenue CD. After all, this is Yellowcard we’re talking about, and their most famous record. The songs are all still top notch, even if they don’t hit as hard acoustically as they did in their original form. Happy 10th Anniversary, Ocean Avenue! You did so many of us a lot of good all those years ago. You may have just hit that platinum status via your sales, but the truth is you’ve been just that in your fans’ eyes since debuting back in ’03.
