Eight pointed stars show up in a variety of different cultures. An eight-pointed star, or an octagram, is a regular self-intersecting octagon. It is a well known and widely recognized symbol, with many meanings which depend on the region, culture or the spiritual system. Just to mention a few examples: the ancient Babylonians believed that an eight pointed star represented the goddess Ishtar, associated with the planet Venus. In Judeo-Christian culture, it is an agent for new beginnings. Egyptians believed that it represented eight deities, four male gods and four female gods, known as the Ogdoad. However, a universal meaning of such stars is that they stand for life, from our birth to death and the wisdom we all possess, no matter how rich or poor we are. The eight pointed star is also a Gnostic symbol, known as the Octagram of Creation. Star of Ishtar The Star of Ishtar or Star of Inanna is a symbol of the ancient Sumerian goddess Inanna and her East Semitic counterpart Ishtar. Alongside the lion, it was one of Ishtar's primary symbols. Because Ishtar was associated with the planet Venus, the star is also known as the Star of Venus. The star of Inanna usually had eight points, though the exact number of points sometimes varies. Six-pointed stars also occur frequently, but their symbolic meaning is unknown. It was Inanna's most common symbol and, in later times, it became the most common symbol of the goddess Ishtar, Inanna's East Semitic counterpart. It seems to have originally borne a general association with the heavens, but, by the Old Babylonian Period, it had come to be specifically associated with the planet Venus, with which Ishtar was identified. Starting during this same period, the star of Ishtar was normally enclosed within a circular disc. During later times, slaves who worked in Ishtar's temples were sometimes branded with the seal of the eight-pointed star. On boundary stones and cylinder seals, the eight-pointed star is sometimes shown alongside the crescent moon, which was the symbol of Sin, god of the Moon, and the rayed solar disk, which was a symbol of Shamash, the god of the Sun. The rosette was another important symbol of Ishtar which had originally belonged to Inanna. During the Neo-Assyrian Period, the rosette may have actually eclipsed the eight-pointed star and become Ishtar's primary symbol. The temple of Ishtar in the city of Aššur was adorned with numerous rosettes. In Babylonian symbolism, the goddess Ishtar is represented by an eight-pointed starburst, and she is associated with the planet of Venus. Today, some people equate the Greek Aphrodite, whom the Romans equated with their Venus, with Ishtar. Both goddesses represent lust and sexuality, although Ishtar also represents fertility and war. In Judeo-Christian, the number eight frequently represents beginnings, resurrection, salvation, and super-abundance. This has to do with the fact that the number seven is a number of completion. The eighth day, for example, is the first day of a new seven-day week, and a Jewish child enters into God's Covenant on the eighth day of life via circumcision. Native American: symbols are geometric portrayals of celestial bodies, natural phenomena and animal designs. The Hope symbol is represented by the eight pointed star, that is enclosed in a circle and containing a circle. Eight is an important number in terms of achieving balance. The Native American Indians referred to the Hope symbol as Star Knowledge. Old Kingdom Egyptians recognized a group of eight deities, four male and four female, with the female bearing feminine forms of the male names: Nu, Nanet, Amun, Amunet, Kuk, Kauket, Huh, and Hauhet. Each pair represents a primal force, water, air, darkness, and infinity, and together they create the world and the sun god Ra from the primordial waters. Together, these eight are known as the Ogdoad, and this context is borrowed by other cultures which may represent it with an octagram. The second century Gnostic Valentinius wrote about his own concept of the Ogdoad, which again is four male/female pairs of what they considered primordial principles. First, Abyss and Silence brought forth Mind and Truth, which then produced Word and Life, which finally produced Man and Church. Today, various pursuers of esoterica have drawn upon various concepts of the Ogdoad Star of Lakshmi. In Hinduism, Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, has eight emanations known as Ashtalakshmi, which are represented by two entwined squares forming an octagram. These emanations represent eight forms of wealth: monetary, ability to transport, endless prosperity, victory, patience, health and nourishment, knowledge, and family. Judeo-Christian Esoterica Esoteric thinkers working with Hebrew and the names of God would place the Hebrew letters for YHWH and ADNI (Yahweh and Adonai) within the points of an Octagram. Buddhists use an eight-spoked wheel to represent the Eightfold Path taught by the Buddha as a means to escape suffering through the breaking of attachments. These paths are right view, right intention, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right concentration. The Wiccan Wheel of the Year is commonly represented as a circle containing eight spokes or an eight-pointed star. Each point is a major holiday known as a Sabbat. Wiccans emphasize the system of holidays as a whole: each holiday is influenced by what has come before and prepares for the one approaching next. The 8 Pointed Star of the Anunnaki: In ancient mythology, the 8-pointed star represents the God of the heaven who was called Anu (Aunu, Aun). This star is actually not a star at all, but the largest planet in our solar system, Jupiter. The oldest records of the word Anu comes to us from the Sumerians, and is said to be an Akkadian word brought from the Euphrates to Egypt, meaning Heaven and God. The ancient Akkadians, Assyrians, Chinese, and Phoenicians had known Anu to be the king of the Anunnaki. In Babylonian hymns and incantations, the Igigi and Anunnaki play a very prominent part, in which Anu is represented as the father of both groups. The Anunnaki, who as children of Enki were the special friends of the newly created men. Jupiter is known as the star of Babylon, that which is frequently spoken of in the Inscriptions as Marduk and Niribu (né-bé-ru) who is called the god of the morning-and spring sun, or what we can call the blazing morning star. Astrological Origin: The roots of the eight-pointed star symbolize the four corners of space. The eight lines are symbolic of north, south, east, and west; and time as well with the two solstices and two equinoxes. The first cross is the intersection of the Galactic Equator with the ecliptic and the axis perpendicular to this intersection. When the Earth Cross and the Galactic Cross are superimposed they form an eight-pointed cross. The two separate crosses become conjunct and form a single 4 pointed cross during the moments of a Great Celestial Conjunction. After the individual crosses separate again and form an eight-pointed cross again. Flag of Iraq In Arabic, the symbol is known as (romanized: najmat eshtar). The stars of Ishtar and Shamash featured on the coat of arms of the Kingdom of Iraq from 1932-1959. Archetypal Number: As Above, so Below. As Below, so Above; showing the reflection of the Macrocosm in the Microcosm.
