Description: Please review all pictures for overall condition and size, as this helps form the overall condition/description of the item. Wear is consistent with age and use. Has some missing original nails/flathead screws, few pieces of slightly loose hardware, nails/screws replaced with modern ones, the central medallion on the top has some wear, stable cracks, chips, marks, a repair at one of the hinges, the lock was replaced at one point by the looks of it with a lock more modern than the box. Someone must have lost the key because the top part of the lock is still attached to the bottom section of the lock with broken screws. No key with it. It opens and closes fine. Has the original keyhole/Escutcheon cover. There was a note in it when we purchased it, shown in last picture. It says "Kuwaiti chest from Arabia. Lined by a friend. Lock broken." By the looks of the age of the note and the lining, it looks like the friend lined it in the mid century (1940-1960) and not very well. It was a horrible green color, was very worn and poorly done. So we spent a while removing the lining from the box to bring it back to a more original condition. There is still some thin spots of the glue they used but we did most of the work there. Furthermore, we do not believe this chest is "Kuwaiti, from Arabia." It is felt to be more consistent with an Indian style. It has the writing tray inside, which seems original to it, the handle on the back makes us think it's always been used for writing, a merchant and/or campaign box. It has absolutely beautiful age and we'd put it roughly around the early to mid 19th century, possibly earlier. Excellent patina throughout and has tons of charm/character. You can tell this chest has had a nice long life and has a story to it. It most certainly has been used and loved. It is a very nice size and weight, almost 18 pounds. 17.625" wide X 11" deep X 8.75" tall, measurements are in the photos as well. Please message us with any questions, we respond fast.
