Description: A very attractive, complete and nicely preserved mask from the Dan people on Africa's Atlantic coast. The forehead, eyebrows, nose bridge and mustache area are delineated with dozens of domed metal tacks, now completely rusted but intact. The beard is made from stuffed burlap studded with cowry shells. The eyelids and underlids carry just-better-than-vestigial red pigment, as does the nose. Deaccessioned in the 1970's from Harvard's Peabody Museum of Anthropolgy. It is a beautifully designed and skillfully carved example and would be right at home in Picasso's atelier. About 11" tall. U.S. buyers please. [Boston Primitive]
