Description: Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr. ELSIE VENNER A ROMANCE OF DESTINY Houghton Mifflin Co., NY c. 1891 It has been argued that this book was inspired by the socialite and poet Sarah Morewood whom Holmes Sr. (the writer not his son the jurist) admired and frequently visited at her estate in Pittsfield, Massachusetts where the Holmes had a summer home. Sarah was the married lover (some think) of Herman Melville. Melville wrote MOBY DICK with hopes that it's success would allow him to afford the farm that resided next to the summer home of Sarah. He was disappointed in this respect but remained, though heavily in debt, to carry on a years long affair with Sarah. Their relationship was reflected in Melville's PIERRE OR THE AMBIGUITIES a romance meant to be closer to the taste of the times but which was also a critical and commercial failure. Melville shortly gave up novel writing. His tryst with Mrs. Morewood cooled but continued until she died of TB in 1863. (Those who have pointed out a lack of proof for this connection seem to ignore human nature and willingly accept the age old claim "she's just a friend." Melville was only in his 30's in the 1850s). Only then did he return to New York city for a conventional job and wrote mostly poetry. Holmes, also married, was admiring of the ever flirtatious Sarah (she relished unnevning him) but he was diminutive and shy in comparison with the burly, outgoing and daring Melville. The famous feminist Margaret Fuller whom Holmes knew in his school days may also have been an additional inspiration for Elsie. Elsie Venner was Holmes's first novel, originally published serially in beginning in December 1859 as "The Professor's Story".[3] It was first published as a stand-alone novel in 1861. It was republished in 1883 and 1891. All books are in the condition stated above. Please examine photos for condition details. I will answer any questions you may have as quickly as possible.
