Think about a vintage car: you wouldn't drive it with oil from the 1960s. These cameras are the same. I see it all the time; I disassemble a camera and see the brass shoulder screws that hold the ISO ring have been gouged out on their backsides, for example, because the grease is stiff and gritty, and I have to creatively swap the screws around to bring their unworn edges into the right orientation. Lots of other parts are also susceptible to wear and damage for the same reasons. Secondly, even if the camera seems to work OK, there are systems that need to be checked and re-calibrated: the meter, the aperture, the focus, etc. These get out of tolerance due to age and normal wear, or even damage. Trust me, they are literally always in need of adjustment, and you cannot tell without disassembling and measuring them in isolation with special instruments. I see the meter reading two stops off, apertures opening a stop too large, the slow shutter speed too fast and the fast one too slow or vice versa, infinity focus set to close range, and so on. All these systems need to be adjusted (and their imperfections balanced against each other to harmonize the whole) so your camera will reliably produce well-exposed, sharply focused images. If you've read up on these cameras and seen anyone say the lens is nice, but not all that sharp—don't believe it, it's an amazingly sharp lens, it's calibrated wrong. Or if people say their meter is weak with age—very unlikely; more likely things just need to be readjusted. Contrary to what you may read on various websites, a proper servicing doesn't require removing the leatherette fully, and the original can be retained, and it is best to do so.
