Description: This is an autographed copy of one of two books written and produced by Jo-Brew and Pat Edwards on the history of the Pacific Highway/U.S. Highway 99 through Oregon. Pat Edwards is the author of "The Folk History," the second book of the series. Jo-Brew, who conceived the project, is the author of the first book in the series subtitled "The Stories." We have listings for both books as singles and as a set of two books in the OREGON'S MAIN STREET: U.S. Highway 99 series. When Jo-Brew began the Highway 99 project, she spent 3-4 years researching the communities along Pacific Highway/U.S. Highway 99 in Oregon. Her main interest was to gather stories from people who had grown up primarily in the 1930s, 40s and 50s in the communities along Highway 99 through Oregon and record their memoirs. She interviewed over 150 of them. She then asked Pat to help her put the information into a book. When we discovered that she had way more information collected than we could put into one book, we took the stories that she collected in the interviews and put them into "The Stories" volume. She turned the rest of the information she had collected over to Pat, who did quite a bit more research, and together they worked on "The Folk History" which is more the history of not only the highway, itself, but of the 94 communities that line it through Oregon. They tried to collect the more interesting, lesser-known tidbits of each of the community histories – not just the already familiar histories they are best known for. "The Folk History" also covers information on the transportation systems that were in place before the highway was built – the trails and stage routes; railroad and steamship info, etc. – and many of the WPA interviews done in the late 1930s are included. Together, Jo and Pat have worked together on the project – researching, compiling, layout, publication and promotion – for over 4 years now, and each has taken ownership of one of the books. A recent review (there are many more): Oregon's Main Street: U. S. Highway 99: It was fabulous and so detailed and well researched. Full of so many never-before-seen photos. Nice size, easy to read. I can't imagine how exhaustive tracking down all the people for the "stories", not to mention the research. Very needed book. Thank you to you and Jo for doing it.
