New York: New York Theatre Program Corporation, 1933. Small quarto [9-1/2 inches high by 7 inches wide] softcover bound in pictorial black-and-white wrappers. The edges of the wrappers are very slightly darkened. 40 pages. Illustrated in black & white with the stars pictured on the front wrap & with profuse pictorial ads, including an ad for Chesterfield cigarettes on the rear wrap. Very good. Gershwin's "Let 'Em Eat Cake" opened on Broadway on October 21, 1933 and ran for 89 performances. Although it was the sequel to "Of Thee I Sing" and had the same producer, writers and stars, the tone of the sequel was much darker and the issues were more complex: Wintergreen's bid for reelection is defeated and he and Throttlebottom form an incipient Fascist movement to take over the government. The show's message was one that the audience did not wish to hear and the musical was a failure. TERMS: Shipping charges are calculated based on the total packed weight of this item.
