Description: About this work: “Playing in the Surf, 2006” by Paul G. Oxborough (American, b. 1965) A wonderful example of Oxborough’s renowned contemporary impressionist paintings. Oxborough has a particular fascination with movement and light, as explored in this work depicting a child playing in the waves along the beach. The work is wonderfully textured, particularly in the foamy whites of the crashing wave. The work comes with an appraisal from Eleanor Ettinger Gallery dated September 5, 2013 (for $6,400). Since the time of the appraisal, Oxborough’s work has been included in numerous additional exhibitions around the US, as recently as 2024. The work is oil on linen and is housed in a beautiful gilt frame. It is signed in the lower right and retains a label from Eleanor Ettinger Gallery on the reverse. Size: 7 inches tall by 9.75 inches wide (painting) 15.25 inches tall by 17.75 inches wide by 2.5 inches deep (frame) Provenance: Eleanor Ettinger Gallery, NY; Private collection; Acquired from the above About the artist: “Almost all my work comes from real life, I paint things I actually see: my wife Jenny on a train, my daughter waking up, a guy in a museum and I paint the way I think people see — not with photographic accuracy, but with impressions. I think of myself as an impressionist — painting the impression of light hitting your eyes; the impression of color you see at a glance…I like the idea of people working, moving, but that’s hard to do — it’s hard to capture people in motion, I have a lot of people at rest, for obvious reasons: because they sit still…” Paul G. Oxborough began his formal studies in the visual arts at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design and subsequently with Annette LeSueur, a former student of Boston School painter, Richard Lack. During his 4 year apprenticeship at Atelier LeSueur he studied classical technique in the French tradition. Oxborough is best known for his figure, portrait, and interior genre scenes. His loose brushwork, muted palette, and emphasis on the effects of light reveal to the viewer moments of fleeting life caught within the privacy of his own home, the places he frequents, and trips abroad. Oxborough is represented by galleries in Connecticut, Florida, New York, and Massachusetts. He has exhibited numerous times at the British and Scottish National Portrait Galleries, the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery, as well as several other notable museums. He has been the subject of many articles and reviews in publications such as ArtNews, Art & Antiques, Southwest Art, and CNN. His awards include First Place in the Artist’s Magazine Portrait Competition, Awards of Excellence from the Communication Arts magazine and the President’s Award from the American Society of Portrait Artists. His work is included in many esteemed collections both public and corporate. Condition: Excellent overall condition. No noticeable defects to the painting.
