Signed lower right.Art 11.5” x 23.75”, with frame 17.75” x 30”Acrylic, damar varnishView of quay with tall-masted vesselGARCIA was born in Monterey, CA. Of Portuguese descent, the artist assimilated the age old knowledge and understanding of the sea his mother and father brought with them from the Azores.Monterey's colorful waterfront, with its busy canneries and squawking sea gulls, made a vivid impression on the young Garcia; his mother was active in the town's prospering fishing industry. At the age of eight he drew a color-crayon mural of wharves and boats on his bedroom wall. While in high school Garcia worked for Ed Ricketts, the noted marine biologist and true-life model for "Doc" in John Steinbeck's novel, Cannery Row.From his skin-diving experience, Garcia has perceptively translated the awesome beauty of the undersea world onto his canvases. Inspired by the myriad columns and rays of refracted light and color under the sea, Garcia originated the "vertical color flow," with which he creates exciting color combinations and gives depth to his paintings. The unique impasto textural effects, for which he is well-known, give his paintings added dimension and reveal his skill as a sculptor and his versatility as an artist. At 13 he received his first instruction in oil painting at a summer art course on the Monterey Peninsula. The artist's two years of Naval service were spent in the Far East, and many of his paintings bear an oriental influence. Garcia studied art and architecture at Monterey Peninsula College, graduating in 1954. Although primarily an impressionist, Garcia's style has ranged from realism to abstraction. A creative force behind the "Carmel School of Art," Garcia is recognized as a brilliant and sensitive colorist!Among the notable collectors who own his work are Princess Margaret and Lord Snowdon, Mrs. Robert F. Kennedy, Mr. and Mrs. Dean Martin, and Frank Sinatra. The above was taken from the Garcia Gallery pamphlet.
