This stunningly realistic image of the mighty Corsair streaking through the tops of a cumulous layer evokes this iconic fighter's command of its realm. The Corsair was designed for carrier operations, which duty necessitates very tough landing gear. The huge Pratt & Whitney R-2800 engine (2800 cubic inch displacement, 2000+ horsepower) needed a very big propeller to use that HP; over 13 feet in diameter. In order to have ground clearance for such a large prop, the airplane would have needed taller than usual main gear legs. The designers at Chance Vought found a unique solution - build the wing in an inverted gull form with the main landing gear legs housed at the low point in the bend. This allowed for shorter gear legs, while providing adequate ground clearance for the huge propeller - and gave us one of the most iconic airplane designs of the Second World War. I flew with Captain Harris as his copilot. As you see, he knew his airplanes and how the sky and clouds can look in the dynamism of flight. Painting is on canvas, in excellent condition, stretched over a conventional hardwood spreader.
