This war shifted power from Athens to Sparta, making Sparta the most powerful city-state in the region. The war featured two periods of combat separated by a six-year truce. As I recall this illustration shows the Battle of Aegospotami, which was a naval confrontation that took place in 405 BC and was the last major battle of the Peloponnesian War. In the battle, a Spartan fleet under Lysander destroyed the Athenian navy. The ArtistRichard Schlecht grew up in Colorado and graduated from the University of Denver with a degree in journalism. He came to art as an illustrator of military subjects during his service in the Army, and he worked at commercial graphics studios before embarking on a freelance career in 1967. A specialist on the subjects of underwater archaeology, maritime history, and the visual reconstruction of historic and prehistoric archaeological sites, he has worked extensively with National Geographic, the National Park Service, Time-Life Books, and Colonial Williamsburg. He has also created artwork for 21 U.S. stamps.
