Not a copy, but all original and complete, the horn is almost identical to a horn in the Seraphinoff collection sold by us in 2012. The “New Langwill Index” has a brief history of the firm, showing the several Augustins address(es) dating from 1816. Our instrument does not show a street address or number. Acquired by us some time ago, it’s a “works in progress” instrument: we’ve spent a considerable amount of time with restoration work to the body / bell and to some of the crooks. No filing, sanding or heavy machine-polishing has been done. Our goal is to keep the instrument as original as possible. “Works in progress” means that the price of the horn includes our removing any remaining dents and dings from the crooks. We need thirty to forty additional hours to finish the restoration and that figure is included in our price. Our small shop in Wichita has, so it seems, gained the reputation of being specialists for French horns of all sorts. We are the USA agent for Alexander and always have a large selection of their instruments. Horns from the Engelbert Schmid workshop are also always available from our inventory. Clean and restored second-hand American and German instruments are usually available, but we sell no horns that are “used, in need of repair”. Most, but not all, of our horns are posted on EBay. Antique horns from the 19th and early 20th century come to us in small numbers. Our goal is to buy unrestored instruments and “add value” by removing dents and performing other repairs as needed. Our “Courtois neveu aine” is quite original, has no thin spots or serious damage to the brass. Two small patches (ours) are at the curve of the mouthpipe, otherwise the instrument is close) to being pristine. We note that similar Courtois neveu aine horns are in several museums, including that of the Berlin Philharmonic and the Metropolitan Museum in New York. As with the Courtois we sold in 2012, our instrument wears a 285 mm bell diameter. We measure the bore (at the end of the mouthpipe, just before the tuning slide) at 10.5 mm. There are ten crooks with the horn ( nine plus a coupler in Bb ). Most of the crooks are original; several are similar and from the same time-period, but have different mouthpiece receivers. Two small-shank mouthpieces come with the horn, perhaps original. The box / case for the horn is original, has not been restored and still wears the circa 1830 ( ? ) lining. Please note that the inside of the bell wears about fifty percent of the original painting. We do not recommend altering that paint in any way. Our price is based on our acquisition costs plus more than one-hundred hours labor, the most of it in the de-denting of the crooks.
