Description: ORIGINAL - GOTHA GERMANY " RATHAUS" (CITY HALL) LARGE BEAUTIFUL PHOTO c1890's The building was built in 1567–77 according to plans by the master builders Caspar Mans , Christoph Goetze and Nicolaus Rausch in place of a previous wooden building. It initially served as a department store . From 1640 to 1646 it was the home of the first Duke of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg , Ernst I , until he moved to Friedenstein Castle, which was built at his behest. After the city fire in 1665, it was rebuilt and converted into a town hall under master builder Rudolphi. The large council chamber on the second floor was created in 1852. In 1897–98 the interior of the building and the facade were redesigned in the Neo-Renaissance style. The building survived the Second World War and the air raids on Gotha largely unscathed. The building was fundamentally renovated between 1994 and 1998. Today it houses the office of the mayor and some city administration offices. [1] The former Schlosshotel Gotha at Ekhofplatz 24 serves as the new town hall and headquarters of the majority of Gotha's city administration. PRINTED ON THE REVERSE: Verkehrsverein Gotha e. D.
