Description: Thomas Hart Benton (1889-1975) stands at the top of the USA "Regionalist" movement and is acknowledged as one of America's greatest painters and printmakers. His iconic style typlified life in America (particularly the midwest) in the 30's, 40's and 50"s with common themes of rural life and family interactions. He experimented with abstract after after a post WWI visit to Europe but he ultimately remained faithful to representational depictions of the everyday lives of rural Americans. He was also a noted teacher in NYC with Jackson Pollock and many other famous artists as his students. Artwork for sale is an original gouache/watercolor painting in achromatic shades of gray. Image is a rugged lumberjack, farmer or woodsman in his country clothes with his axe in his hands. Painting is signed "Benton" at the lower right (photo 2). The image is on stiff paper and the sheet measures 16" high and 12' across. This is an extremely well executed characterization. There is no paperwork for provenance so the artwork is being sold as attributed to Thomas Hart Benton on the basis of style, subject and signature. Date is unknown but likely from the late 50's or early 60"s. Purchase this gem by an American master and get an original painting for a fraction of the cost of a signed Benton lithograph. (Photo 13 is an image of Benton making a sketch).
