It was situated approximately 35 miles southwest of Saigon. Initially the base was primarily operated by the United States Army and was established as part of the U.S. military's strategy to secure the region and support South Vietnamese forces and later used by US Navy PBR and SEAL cres.Dong Tam was strategically located in the Mekong Delta, an area of significant importance due to its agricultural productivity and the extensive network of waterways. The base served as a staging area for American and South Vietnamese forces conducting operations in the region. It also housed a large helicopter unit and a logistics support center.One of the notable events associated with Dong Tam during the Vietnam War was the Battle of Dong Tam, which took place on June 9-10, 1969. This battle was a part of Operation Speedy Express, a military campaign aimed at disrupting and defeating Viet Cong and North Vietnamese forces in the Mekong Delta.During the Battle of Dong Tam, a large-scale assault was launched by the Viet Cong on the Dong Tam Base. The attackers managed to breach the outer perimeter of the base but were ultimately repelled by American and South Vietnamese forces. The battle resulted in heavy casualties on both sides, with approximately 80 Viet Cong fighters and 24 American soldiers killed.In addition to military operations, Dong Tam also played a role in the Civil Operations and Rural Development Support (CORDS) program. CORDS was a U.S. initiative aimed at winning the support of the Vietnamese population by providing assistance and development projects in rural areas. Dong Tam served as a base for CORDS activities in the Mekong Delta, focusing on infrastructure projects, medical assistance, and agricultural development.Following the end of the Vietnam War in 1975, Dong Tam Base was abandoned by the U.S. military and eventually turned over to the Vietnamese government.
