Description: We shall be listing a number of artworks which have been collected over the past 50 years all of which are kept in secure and controlled storage. Original Pencil and Colour Wash Drawing 1868 (George Cattermole)Scenario of Piazza Vittorio Luino Creva Measures 10 1/8" x 7"Paper condition is as shown, the paper is quite heavy and is in good condition The drawing is dated 86 we sent this to the Tourist office in Luino they have confirmed the date as the column to the right of the drawing is the Hotel Ancora which was finished in 1855 and in 1870 a landing ramp for the boats was built at the front on the hotel. We have other signed drawings which we believe to be by George Cattermole who was a friend of and illustrated for Charles Dickens (Barnaby Rudge and the tale of the riot on the eighty) This drawing was acquired at a house contents sale in 1972 the house in question was number 26 Highfield Road Edgbaston the former family home of the Taylor family. Edward Richard Taylor was the Principal at the Birmingham School of Art - William Howson Taylor moved out in 1934 his sisters remained in the house - The sale was a cash sale for the entire contents of the house which had to be cleared within three days from the sale. We paid £750 which would be £8000 today which is a vast sum for such a sale. The fixtures and fittings were distributed amongst various properties we had in the area. Although it was the library that we were ultimately bidding for and as the price reflects we were not the only ones. Edward R Taylor founded the Ruskin pottery in 1898 and his son William Howson Taylor managed the pottery until its closure in 1935 when he and his new wife lit a fire and burnt all the formulae for the glazes and all the pottery documentation. We know Edward allowed his children to choose six books each from the library and we were looking for any clue as to the formulae and as Pilkingtons invested three million pounds and five years trying with limited success to replicate the glazes it gives an idea what the libraries potentially worth could have been. Nothing was discovered relating to the formulae, however the books were found to house a good number of paintings and drawings given that books are an excellent place to store drawings and that Edward Richard Taylor was the Principal at the Birmingham School of Art this could have been what the others bidders were also after. The viewing was at 10am and the sale at 11am and you were not allowed to touch anything so no-one would have known what the books contained unless my father got tipped off which wouldn't surprise me in the slightest. We are selling on eBay as they will charge around 8% whereas auction houses are asking for 25% on sale and 15% addition to the buyer plus 20% VAT.
