The Moulin de la Galette is the only working windmill on the Butte Montmartre in the 18th arrondissement of Paris. It is visible at the corner of rue Lepic and rue Girardon and was once a famous tavern. Passage place essential, it sees pass many artists, painted by Renoir, Toulouse-Lautrec, Van Gogh, Picasso, ... It is also found in the song of Brassens (Les amours d'antan). Son of a family of the Parisian banking and merchant bourgeoisie, Paul Sescau sees his future darken when his parents go bankrupt around 1880. He must then give up a privileged status and work as a commercial employee. Passionate about photography, he opted to make it his profession and opened a studio in 1893 at no53 rue Rodier in Paris. In 1896, he moved to No9 Place Pigalle in the building that houses the artists' café La Nouvelle Athens, frequented by his Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. He practiced his art as a portrait painter and also published photographs in a form of contemporary photo novel. Taking advantage of his installation as close as possible to many artists, he quickly became a specialist in photographic reproduction of paintings. He also innovated from a technical point of view, he invented “sescaugraphy”, a reproduction process, and in 1900 patented a process, “electro-enamel”. He is also gifted for music and excels at the banjo, this added to his reputation as a womanizer and gai-luron loving disguises, Sescau is then a picturesque figure of Montmartre. He fell into a certain oblivion after the death of Toulouse-Lautrec, the arrival of the First World War and the end of the Belle Époque. He died in 1926 and his photographic archives disappeared, only an album of 35 photographs was transferred to the National Library of France.
