In many cases, employee membership in the ROH was practically mandatory and automatic. Due to the fact that under socialism, confrontational demarcation with the employer was not desirable, the activities of ROH trade unions were usually focused on collecting membership fees, organizing social and recreational activities and operating recreational facilities for workers, the proverbial characteristic activity was the annual distribution of Christmas collections of chocolate figures intended for hanging on Christmas trees. At that time, trade unions, like party cells of the Communist Party of the Czech Republic, also took part in the evaluation of workers in various situations, could vouch for them in criminal proceedings, etc. Extraordinary all-trade convention on 2.-3. March 1990 decided on the abolition of the ROH and the transfer of powers and property to the successor organizations. The newly constituted unions united in the Czechoslovak Confederation of Trade Unions and its Czech-Moravian Chamber of Trade Unions, which still covers trade unions in the Czech Republic (Wiki).
