Description: I'm currently listing a large number of playbills from out-of-town tryouts prior to the Broadway runs. Many are from early performances when revisions were common and include song titles that were cut before opening in New York. (See cut songs below.) ....... This is a rare four-page playbill from the Pre-Broadway engagement of the OSCAR HAMMERSTEIN II and SIGMUND ROMBERG musical "SUNNY RIVER" at the Shubert Theatre in New Haven, Connecticut. (The production would open December 4th, 1941 at New York's St. James Theatre and close after only 36 performances.) ..... The ensemble cast included CAROL RENEE, JOAN SHEPHERD, EDWIN BRUCE MOLDOW, RICHARD HUEY, AINSWORTH ARNOLD, IVY SCOTT, BOB LAWRENCE, DONALD CLARK, GEORGE HOLMES, GORDON DILWORTH, VICKI CHARLES (Vicki Cummings), ETHEL LEVEY, OSCAR POLK, DUDLEY CLEMENTS, FREDERIC PERSSON, MURIEL ANGELUS, TOM EWELL, HELEN CLAIRE, JOAN ROBERTS, PEGGY ALEXANDER, JACK RIANO, MIRIAM LaVELLE, WILLIAM O'NEAL and HOWARD FREEMAN ..... CREDITS: Music by SIGMUND ROMBERG ("Maytime", "Sinbad", "Poor Little Ritz Girl", "Blossom Time", "The Student Prince", "The Desert Song", "Rosalie", "Up in Central Park", "My Romance", "The Girl in Pink Tights"); Book and Lyrics by OSCAR HAMMERSTEIN II ("Show Boat", "Oklahoma!", "Carousel", "The King and I", "Allegro", "Pipe Dream", "South Pacific", "Flower Drum Song" and "The Sound of Music" among others); Sets designed by STEWART CHANEY; Costumes designed by IRENE SHARAFF; Choreographed by CARL RANDALL; Staged by OSCAR HAMMERSTEIN II; Produced by MAX GORDON ..... DETAILS: The four page playbill measures 5 3/4" X 10 1/2" inches, is printed on a light brown newsprint stock and includes full production credits, cast list, synopsis of scenes and list of musical numbers, but no cast photos or bios ..... CUT SONGS: The list of musical numbers includes "Eleven Levee Street" and "Lordy" which were cut out-of-town ..... CONDITION: With the exception of a horizontal fold, light creasing and minor edge wear, this playbill is in excellent condition and will make a wonderful addition to the collection of any musical theatre aficionado or historian. This item will be carefully packaged in a protective, carded sleeve and backed by stiff cardboard.
