As it stands, she is Mali’s greatest female vocalist, and she sings in the Wassoulou style which is descended from traditional hunting songs and is often accompanied by a calabash. Twenty years after her debut, 2009’s Seya is some of her best work—especially Mogo Kele, which forgoes percussion and relies on the local sounds of the balafon, calabash, and the n’goni to provide a tranquil base over which Sangare relates her advice to make the most of one’s time in this world.
