Description: Original dated & signed German Expressionist gouache painting by artist Frank S. Herrmann (1866-1942). A fine hilly landscape of the area around Neuendorf, a community a few hours to the north of Munich. The painting measures 9 1/2 x 12 1/4 inches, with frame and mat it is approx. 17 1/2 x 20 1/4 inches. It is signed, dated 1920, and titled in the artist's hand in the lower right corner. Condition seems excellent, no sign of tears or foxing. The frame appears to be of the period and shows typical edge abrasions and scuffing, but overall it looks very good. Frank S. Herrmann (1866-1942) was an American born artist with an oddly distinctive career track. In 1895, Herrmann settled in Munich to study at the Munich Academy and remained there for the next 24 years. There he became a co-founder of two major groups of the German Avant-garde in Munich, the Secession group SEMA, which included his close friend, Paul Klee, and the Neue Sezession Deutscher Künstler, led by Wassily Kandinsky. Herrmann gave up working in oils fairly early on and made gouache his medium of choice. By the time he left Germany, his artistic style had evolved to align with the rising New Objectivity (Neue Sachlichkeit) artists. Herrman returned to the United States after the First World War and settle at his family's seat in New Jersey, but devoted time to travel with his good friends Alfred Steiglitz and Georgia O'Keeffe. He allowed his work only limited exposure in the United States, but at age 61 had a solo exhibition in New York City at Babcock Galleries. His primary representative was J. B. Neumann's New Art Circle, and his work was usually grouped with New Objective painters that included Max Beckmann.
