The show was written by Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart, and is based on the novel by John O'Hara. The original cast included Gene Kelly as Joey Evans, a small-time Chicago entertainer, as well as June Havoc, Van Johnson, and Stanley Donen. The show has had several revivals over the years, including productions in 1952, 1963, and 2008, and most recently ran at New York City Center in November 2023
