Description: AA116 Lower Acheulean, from Amguid, Algeria. A classic, ovate handaxe fashioned out of a bright gray-brown, patinated quartzite. The piece is weathered, as are all specimens from Amguid. One side is facially worked with crude flaking and almost no lateral edge retouching. The other side is flat and appears to be unworked facially. This may either be a function of the handaxe having been fashioned on a large flake, or simply the natural side of the raw tabular quartzite. This side is, however, laterally worked at both working edges and at the butt, but with rather crude flaking. The tip of the handaxe is quite thin, and the working edges are wavy. As with all material from Amguid, the handaxe exhibits desert patina, wind polish, and a pitted surface. Flake scars are rounded, as are the long edges and one side of the butt. Ovates from the site are among the rarest form. Length = 18.1 cm. Ex Josef Halm (Germany) Collection. Collected in the early 1970s. Amguid is one of the large, well known Lower Acheulean sites located in Algeria. The gravel fields and tools that litter the site have been exposed to wind and weather for several hundred thousand years and are all patinated and wind polished. No systematic research has yet been conducted at the site.A rare and impressive piece with lots of character. Please ask if questions.
