CONDITION: Absolutely pristine - mint never hinged, no pulled perfs, no toned perfs, perfectly centered, RARE ! NOTE: "d" = penny or pennies, "/-" = shillings, "2/3" = two shillings and 3 pennies. However, the National Bird, Raggiana Bird of Paradise, which is depicted on the National Flag, is not in this set. This striking and attractive set was issued in two parts, four stamps on 28 October 1964 (6d, 8d, 1/- & 10/-), and the remainder on 20 January 1965. The low (penny) values are 21 x 26 mm in size; the higher (shilling) values are 25 x 36 mm. The issue has "PRINTED BY AUTHORITY OF THE / COMMONWEALTH OF AUSTRALIA" across the top and bottom margins of each sheet of stamps.The printer, Helio Courvoiser S.A. of Switzerland, was contracted to print the stamps, which they did using the photogravure process on coated, granite paper.
