Description: Paradox of Honor by Anthony J. Levatino Paradox of Honor is a novel about World War II, a story based on the lives of three German soldiers, their careers, desires, loves, and disappointments. The main character, Peter, falls in love with a young Jewish woman from the ghetto in Poland and rescues her from the fate of concentration camps. His two friends, Hans and Franz, help him protect her. The three men have similar attitudes and political opinions, in opposition to what the S/S and Hitler stand for and dish out, for they had grown up together and still cherished the early memories of his friendships with Jews from their neighborhood. Peters wife, Hilda, is an ambitious woman with an insatiable taste for lovers, who could raise her to a prestigious social level. She manipulates men, as their mistress, using them as stepping stones, elevating herself, eventually, into the arms of a general, who, she believes, can finally deliver to her the power and recognition she has desired. In the meantime, she must contend with her husband. Peter is a serious-minded individual, a lance corporal in the German army, who refuses to attend officers training school, because of his lack of confidence in the new order. Anxious to complete his military obligations, he longs for the war to end, so that he can settle down with his devoted Anna. He and his closest friend, Hans, plan, to eventually, to leave for the United States to begin a new future. Attached since childhood, Peter and Hans are a pair of opposite personalities. Hans, also a lance corporal, is flamboyant and daring, a ladies man, despite the fact that he adores his wife, Ursula. Despite their differences, they are loyal in all circumstances, supporting and protecting each other in all their endeavors, from freeing a trainload of Jews to securing fake identifications for Anna and many other inhabitants in the ghetto. Regardless of dangers faced in these episodes, the two men are determined to carry through with their ideas. Franz, an officer and family man, supports the two men throughout and is prepared to go the limit for them. The narration and dialogue in the novel explain the actual historical events which took place in Poland, the Netherlands, Belgium, France, and Russia, up to the bloody battle of Stalingrad. It also includes the Jewish struggle for survival in Poland, the Baltic countries, and Russia, long before Hitler came into the political picture. There is continuous discussion of the attitude of the Europeans toward the Germans, as it evolves from hopeful zeal to bitter disappointment. As Stalin unleashes his treachery, with his savage and murderous attack on all the Baltic countries, these same countries rally around the advancing German troops. The battles and the hardships endured are included. Peter, Hans, and Franz strengthen their mutual devotion, as they face wartime situations, leading up to the ferocious Battle of Stalingrad, while the women involved face their individual destinies. The main characters lives interweave throughout the novel, expressing a full spectrum of emotions towards each other, dictated by choices and circumstances.
