Description: Paul Gavarni )1804-1866), the nom de plume of Sulpice Guillaume Chevalier, was, after Daumier, the most influential and prolific satirical caricaturists of 19th century France. Here we have him aiming his satirical wit on amateur singers....in this case, a young, lanky woman at song. He depicts her strained, most assuredly heart-felt attempts at artistry in what I think is an almost sympathetic fashion. She wears a shoulderless black velvet dress and holds a music book (which she doesn't consult) while she sings. Behind her a scruffy pianist (wonderfully and vaguely sketched by Gavarni) seems intent on his accompaniment. The title of the piece, ON N'A JAMAIS COMPRIS SON COEUR (One can never understand one's heart!) betrays the notion that this song is a very romantic one and the singer is trying her best to communicate something certainly beyond words. Published as part of a series entitled PHISIONOMIES DES CHANTEURS (The Physical Appearance of Singers) this impression was included in the REVUE ET GAZETTE MUSICALE in 1844. Although this is certainly a satirical caricature it seems to me that Gavarni is hinting that at least the intention of the singer is serious indeed. This would make an excellent gift....framed up nicely....to any singer in your life, amateur or professional (that is, if the singer has a decent sense of humor!). The image is in good condition. There are some scruffy stains at the extreme top and bottom of the sheet....far from the image. See my photos.
