Description: Typed Letter, Signed; on Toledo State Hospital Letterhead, 1903 Author: [AFRICAN AMERICAN HISTORY & LITERATURE] DUNBAR, Paul Laurence Title: Typed Letter, Signed; on Toledo State Hospital Letterhead, 1903 Publication: [Toledo: 1903] Description: Typed Letter, Signed; 2 lines on half-sheet Toldeo State Hospital letterhead, to William Mather Lewis. Dated May 28, 1903: "Dear sir / I have no objection whatever to your use of the poem in your college reader in the matter which you suggest." Signed beneath closing; the signature is clear and unfaded. Mild toning to paper at margins, still Near Fine; a nice example. A brief note, written towards the end of Dunbar's life, when he was in rapidly declining health from the tuberculosis that would claim his life in 1906. The publication to which Dunbar refers must be Lewis's anthology, "Selected readings from the most popular novels, for the use of public readers and for the department of English literature and public speaking in schools and colleges" (New York: Hinds & Noble, 1903) – however no poem by Dunbar appears in that text, which includes only prose extracts; it's possible that poetry was ommitted from that work for editorial reasons, or that Lewis had planned a second anthology of poetic works that was never published. A very brief letter, but something of a rarity: Dunbar's life and career were short, his final years were troubled, and he was not an effusive correspondent. The Toledo State Hospital (formerly the Ohio Hospital for the Insane) connection is not incidental: its Superintendent was Henry Tobey, Dunbar's first great literary patron. Dunbar spent a good deal of time with the Tobey family during this period, and must have used the hospital's return address during his visits; it is unlikely that he was ever admitted as a patient (and we find no evidence of his having been), despite the crippling illness, alcoholism and melancholia of his final years.
