Description: Pavia, ITALY - Certosa di Pavis - Tomb Ludovico il Moro and Beatrice d'Este: Pavia is a town and comune of south-western Lombardy, in Northern Italy, 35 kilometres (22 miles) south of Milan on the lower Ticino river near its confluence with the Po. It has a population of c. 73,086. The city was the capital of the Ostrogothic Kingdom from 540 to 553, of the Kingdom of the Lombards from 572 to 774, of the Kingdom of Italy from 774 to 1024 and seat of the Visconti court from 1365 to 1413. Pavia is the capital of the fertile province of Pavia, which is known for a variety of agricultural products, including wine, rice, cereals, and dairy products. The Certosa di Pavia is a monastery and complex in Lombardy, Northern Italy, situated near a small town of the same name in the Province of Pavia, 8 km (5.0 mi) north of Pavia. Built in 1396–1495, it was once located on the border of a large hunting park belonging to the Visconti family of Milan, of which today only scattered parts remain. It is one of the largest monasteries in Italy. Certosa is the Italian equivalent of Charterhouse: a monastery of the cloistered monastic order of Carthusians founded by St. Bruno in 1044 at Grande Chartreuse. Though the Carthusians in their early centuries were known for their seclusion and asceticism and the plainness of their architecture, the Certosa is renowned for the exuberance of its architecture, in both the Gothic and Renaissance styles, and for its collection of artworks which are particularly representative of the region. Cristoforo Solari (c. 1460–1527), also known as il Gobbo (the hunchbacked), was an Italian sculptor and architect. He was the brother of the painter Andrea Solari. Among his work, one of the most famous is the tomb of the dukes Ludovico il Moro and Beatrice d'Este for the Certosa di Pavia, carved between 1497 and 1499. For a while people thought he had sculpted the Pietà, causing Michelangelo to break into the church and chisel his name on it. This Linen Era (1930-45) postcard is in good condition.
