BUCK - TYPED MANUSCRIPT UNSIGNED 1952 - HFSID 28000 PEARL BUCK Discusses the interaction of communism with China's ancient culture Typed Manuscript, unsigned, 2p, 8½x11. Titled "Foreward", the text appears to be an introduction to the first edition of Dr. Francis L. K. Hsu's classic book, Americans and Chinese: Two Ways of Life, originally published in 1953. Buck has made several ink corrections to the draft text. Pencil note (unknown hand) in upper right of first page: "1952". In full (handwritten corrections underlined): "It is always useful to see ourselves in the mirror of other eyes than our own, especially when the mirror is friendly as well as just. Dr. Francis Hsu knows China, his own country, and he knows, too, the United States, the country where he lives and works, as a human being and scientist. He writes with affection as well as knowledge of both countries. It is of course inevitable that the reader of this book must will ask what changes have taken place in the old and stable structure of Chinese society since Communism has taken control of the government. The chauvinist of the West may boast that his society, imperfect as it often appears to Chinese eyes, has at least resisted the modern tyrant. To this the seasoned Chinese will reply, 'In the past we have often yielded, but we have never surrendered.' He, too, is right. Time alone will can tell which will be the stronger, the Chinese culture of the centuries, or present Communism. Prophesy at the moment is impossible and foolhardy. Chinese culture has perhaps never before been assailed by such destructive techniques as those of monolithic Communism. On the other hand, Communism also has never before attempted the wholesale reversal of so ancient and mighty a culture as the Chinese. Neither pessimism nor optimism can guide. The outcome is hidden in the unknowable future. Whatever the future, however, China's past is of profound value to the scientist and student of human affairs. There are reasons why the Chinese were able to remain a solid and deeply unified people for thousands of years, in spite of political change and upset. These reasons are important to a young and quickly shaping people, such as the Americans are. We do well to ponder the possible weaknesses which could prevent our reaching a long maturity. The past experience of the Chinese before the Communists came, may and can guide us that is, if youth is ever guided by age in our a this country. In China the old social systems provided the channeling of wisdom and experience from one generation to another, thus eliminating a great deal of the waste and ignorance that are inevitable in the American system. On the other hand, the United States so far has escaped the weakening effects of an extreme nepotism, which in Chinese society was the inevitable result of the interdependence of the generations. The contrasts make a fascinating study, and one which raises many questions. Some can be answered and some cannot. Dr. Hsu faces the questions and does not attempt to answer the unanswerable. The result is this interesting and profitable book. - Pearl S. Buck". PEARL S. BUCK (1892-1973), born to Presbyterian missionaries, spent the first forty years of her life in China, the setting of many of her books. Her second novel, The Good Earth, won the 1932 Pulitzer Prize, and Buck also won the 1938 Nobel Prize in Literature for her epic works about China. She later wrote about other Asian nations, including India and Korea. FRANCIS L. K. HSU (1909-2000) was a Chinese-born anthropologist who taught for thirty years at Northwestern University and published many noteworthy books. A revised edition of Hsu's Americans and Chinese was one of the books President Nixon read in preparation for his historic visit to China in 1971. Paperclip impressions in upper left of each page.
