PER MANUFACTURER/DESIGNER/RETAILER: “1944: No Mintmark Under Date: Philadelphia Mint Struck the Coin. 1957: The Wheat Penny was designed by Victor David Brenner. 1964: A 1964 penny with no mint mark is a rare collector's coin that has a unique error during printing and publishing in 1964. In 1964, Mary Adams, the Director of the US Mint, decided to remove mint marks from all US coins to reduce demand from collectors. 1973: A 1973 Abraham Lincoln brown penny with no mint mark is extremely rare, and some have sold for thousands of dollars. 1975: These coins are produced in Philadelphia, unless they are minted in San Francisco. For many years, Philadelphia minted millions of coins without a mint mark because they were the only mint in production and there was no need to verify the location where the coin was struck. 1982: In 1982, seven different varieties of 1982 cents were produced. Due to the escalating price of copper and Lincoln cents costing more to produce than one cent, the U.S. Mint changed the composition of 1982 Bronze cents and began producing zinc cents instead. __________________ 5.
