I bought it because I spend quite a bit of time sitting at my desk working at my computer and he liked to hop up on the desk to help "guard the house from squirrels and other nefarious actors" but I couldn't leave him up there when I wasn't there to get him down. He has no problems getting himself up and down the stairs and fairly often will just go up there to sleep. Ymmv - our other chi does not like being up there but she also never wanted to be on my desk to look out the window. g*****l 5 Stars PERFECT FOR HER NEEDS My little Frenchy pup has recently found her voice and has struggled to see what she is barking at. I bought this for her, and at first, she didn’t want to climb up.You see she has a fear of open stairways. If the stairs have solid backs, she’s fine. My daughter velcroed cardboard and made backs for the stairs. That solved that problem!With encouragement and treats placed on the top, she has eventually learned to use it herself and often runs up there just to look or the occasional bark at someone walking by.I did not like the fact this slid a bit on our hardwood floors, so when she was excited, either jumping up or down, the stairs separated and she would stumble. To fix this, I ordered a rubber mat for under it. Problem solved!Despite having these issues that were easily solved, I would highly recommend this item. It is versatile BECAUSE the stairs are not attached so you can set it up in a variety of settings.So far we are extremely pleased!
