Description: DETAILS: Original pinback button for a March Against Hunger held on April 26, 1970. The march was organized by progressive students in Forest Hills, NY who wanted to make a difference in their community. The students organized the march for the American Freedom from Hunger Foundation and the money raised went to support the Free Breakfast Program at the Ebenezer Baptist Church in Flushing, Queens. An estimated 30,000 participants attended the march. It was the first time that a large protest led by student radicals had appeared in the suburbs of New York City and its impact was profound. At the end of the march, a folk concert was held featuring Don McClean and Pete Seeger. The march was one of the earliest Walk-A-Thons ever organized. An interesting aside from the event is that future Treasury Secretary Jacob "Jack" Lew is was one of the original 25 organizers of the event. Lew made a reference to this when he gave a speech at his alma mater Forest Hills High School.
