Description: Petrified Peanut Wood Lapidary Rough Rock The lovely Petrified Peanut Wood unpolished chunk of rough rock is slabbed on one face and it is 7 inches long by 3 inches wide and 3 inches thick. It weighs 2.36 lbs. and is shown wet in the first 2 pictures. This lovely Petrified Wood is known as Peanut Wood for its interesting patterns. The light colored areas are what used to be boreholes in the original wood. The original conifer wood was washed into the ocean and then attacked by small marine shellfish called "Teredo" . They bore small tunnels into the wood & eventually the entire piece was riddled with boreholes. When the wood became waterlogged, it sank to the bottom of the ocean & settled into the mud. It is found along the edges of the Kennedy Ranges about 100 miles inland from the coastal town of Carnarvon, Western Australia. The age is Cretaceous, which makes it around 70 million years old!
