Like many vintage timepieces I own, it was purchased from a retiring watchmaker & reseller and remained in my collection, unworn for over 20+ years. Presented here is a fantastic ALL ORIGINAL example of a vintage Swiss Made Zodiac Olympus Mystery Dial watch rarely seen in this condition. During the 1950s through the 1960s, mid-to-high level watchmakers released mystery dial read models that caught the eye of the public fascinated with the developing space age. The rotating disk and single hand dial certainly felt it arrived from the future. And as Zodiac's famous Astrographic model showed, the company has always embraced forward-thinking design. This time, it's all packed in the Olympus model, affectionately referred to the "Manta-Ray Model" because of the asymmetric case's resemblance to the graceful sea creature. The model's importance is significant enough to the company that modern Zodiac reissued the watch several years ago in a stainless steel version. It's nice offering but the beauty, presence, and history doesn't match the original. The fanciful-shaped case is in exceptional condition, the best one out of five gold finish versions I've owned over 25 years. The gold plated case finish is near flawless. There are no surface scratches, gouges, or wear noted as exhibited with most examples out in the wild. The case back is also exceptional with the original factory matte finish fully noted, which is also a rarity as modest examples have seen polishing. Under the clean and clear acrylic crystal is a matte gold sunburst brushed disk and handset dial set that are also superb. The original hand lume exhibits little age. No aspect of the dial has been refinished. The watch name and "Swiss Made" hallmarks at 6 o'clock are perfect. The highly jeweled Swiss Made Zodiac Caliber 70-72 mechanical automatic movement sets and winds perfectly, as do the connected disk and handset. The timekeeping is excellent under visual observation over 48 hours. The moment has not been overhauled during my ownership. Mated to the watch head is a new old stock, factory original, genuine black leather strap with matching gold tone buckle and Zodiac logo. The Zodiac logo is embossed on the long end reverse side but is hard to photograph. This package will thrill a collector. It's a rare condition find, indeed.
