PIERRE-JEAN DE BÉRANGER - AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED 10/30/1829 - HFSID 44040 PIERRE-JEAN DE BRANGER The French poet responds to a letter of invitation, and signs simply as "Branger", dated 1829. Extremely rare! Autograph letter signed: "Branger", 4 pages (integral leaf), 7x9¼. Paris, France. October 29, 1829. In French, untranslated. Response written on the verso of an invitation from an unknown signer, "Guillebue". French poet and songwriter Pierre-Jean de Branger (1780-1857) has often be called "the most popular French songwriter of all time", writing a prolific amount of working during his life and appealing to the developing French culture and society. Born of a poor family, Branger spent most of his life in squalor, only achieving success after writing a somewhat desperate letter to Lucien Bonaparte to read his work. In return, Bonaparte sent him a small sum of money (1,000 Francs) to continue writing. After the Napoleonic wars and the restoration of the Bourbon monarchy, Branger became the people's poet, lamenting the new government and writing of the republic's former glory. He was eventually arrested for his political writings, though the imprisonment did little to faze him, and he still produced work while living in the arguably better environment. After the French revolution in 1848, Branger was elected to a government position, but ultimately resigned and retired to a very private life until his death in 1857. Multiple folds. Heavily toned. Stained across. Surface creases. Edges heavily worn and torn. Corners worn and creased. Stray ink marks on front and verso. Wax seal on top margin. Corners torn on top margin. Soiled. Otherwise, fine condition. See more material from these signers: PIERRE-JEAN DE BÉRANGER See more listings in our AUTHORS (1,858) category. Please note that this is an authentically signed item.
