Description: Please note, this is a VERY HEAVY genuine primitive antique 1850's tool and is over 150 years old. The large antique large adjustable pipe wrench pliers are made out of heavy steel and weighs approximately 11.0 pounds. The tool has an overall length of approximately 26.0". The adjustable wrench is stamped with the number "3" above a small "ANVIL" looking design on one side of a handle located just below the lock nut and again on the side of the top jaw. I cannot see any other markings on the tool. For your further consideration and review below is some additional information I was able to gather from my internet research on this antique tool. It appears this wrench is identified and issued a U. S. Patent No. 22,157 to James R. Brown from Boston, Massachusetts on November 30, 1858. Below is the actual patent diagram and brief history as copied and pasted directly from the Directory of American Tool and Machinery Patents website. Brown's patent pipe tongs had the fulcrum point in a block which could be moved by an adjusting screw. Brown's Pipe Tongs (with later refinements) was a "staple" tool for plumbers etc. for decades. Late 19th & early 20th Century catalog illustrations show a patent extension dated Nov. 30, 1872 -- the Patent Gazette notes it Nov. 19, 1872, antedated to Jan. 10, 1872). Brown patented an "improvement" on July 7, 1868 (Pat. No. 79,724). Brown became insolvent in 1860; Edward H. Ashcroft subsequently acquired rights to the Brown patent, and filed suit against J.J. Walworth Co., which had a competing claim to the rights and had been marketing Brown's pipe tongs. Ashcroft won the suit [Ashcroft v. Walworth (1872)].
