Additional personnel: Matt Bayles (piano). Lyrics included. Aggressive emocore outfit Planes Mistaken for Stars formed in Peoria, IL, originally consisting of singer/guitarist Gared O'Donnell, guitarist Matt Bellinger, bassist Aaron Wise, and drummer Mike Ricketts. Upon signing to Deep Elm, the group made its recorded debut in early 1999 on the label compilation The Moment of Truth: The Emo Diaries, Chapter Three; the label reissued a self-titled EP later that year, originally self-released in 1998. Wise was replaced by bassist Jamie Drier (who had previously played in the band Dismiss with O'Donnell and Bellinger) soon after, and following a move to Denver, CO, Planes Mistaken for Stars resurfaced on a three-way split EP with labelmates the Appleseed Cast and Race Car Riot. The more dynamic and hardcore-tinged EP Knife in the Marathon appeared in early 2000. The guys jumped to Gainesville's No Idea Records for the 2001 full-length F* with Fire, following up in October of 2002 with the Spearheading the Sin Movement 7". Drier exited the group the next year, and Chuck French filled his shoes on bass. With producer A.J. Mogis (Cursive, Bright Eyes) behind the controls, the harder and more explosive Up in Them Guts appeared in mid-summer 2004 and the band supported it with a lengthy tour schedule of the U.S. and Europe, hooking up with bands like Against Me!, Hot Water Music, Dillinger Escape Plan, the Ataris, and Cursive along the way. Relentless touring continued into the next year, and Planes inked a deal with Abacus Recordings in fall 2005. Soon after, Bellinger announced his departure from the band to concentrate full-time on work with Ghost Buffalo (whom he and Ricketts had been playing with on the side). French moved over to guitar to make room for new member, bassist Neil Keener. The band's delayed and highly anticipated Abacus debut, Mercy, finally arrived stores in October 2006, and they hit the road with These Arms Are Snakes soon afterward. Furious, intense, and capable, at odd moments, of painful beauty, Planes Mistaken for Stars smolder and churn on their third proper album, produced by Matt Bayles (These Arms are Snakes, Mastodon). Piercing vocals suggest "screamo," but on songs like "Little Death" there is more going on harmonically than that simple label would indicate. Editorial Reviews PMFS play rumbling, low-hertz riff-rock that sounds like a rusted ice-pick brawl... Alternative Press The line-up remains strong as ever, and the music just as forceful and driven...the sound is developed and refined, without losing the raw agression of the one preceding. The way Planes Mistaken for Stars starts off its 2006 album Mercy, with lead singer Gared O'Donnell barking in a tortured but defiant rasp, between sprawling boogie and tense, trebly riffs and the compelling impact of this album is not merely what it synthesizes but how it delivers the results -- whatever their emo roots were, lumping these guys in with Panic! At the Disco would be pretty ridiculous. The gang shouts on "Crooked Mile" and the crushing conclusion of "To Spit a Sparrow," with a final coda that acts as just-gentle-enough balm, are the work of an act that knows its metal, its hardcore, its goth and more besides. Above all else, Planes Mistaken for Stars are incredible arrangers of their work -- they know just how to place things for maximum effect. Consider the thrilling solo that opens "Widow: A Love Song," a shrieking, ascending blast upwards, and how that contrasts with the brutal descending riffs at the conclusion that then slowly rise in turn. The muffled, almost Cure-like drums from Mike Ricketts that open "Keep Your Teeth" -- not to mention its gorgeous mid-song break -- and the split-second guitar squeals on "Little Death" are just some of the many standout moments. Credit goes to them as well for a great, sharp sense of humor -- thus the song title "Killed by Killers Who Kill Each Other" -- plus making a somewhat short CD (38 minutes) seem like a massive epic, down to its hushed acoustic guitar/piano conclusion "Penitence."
