It is one of a series of images most likely taken by Frederick York (or assistant) in London Zoo (the Zoological Society of London ZSL) and published by his company as lantern slides. This image is titled to the rim 'Polar Bear. Thalassarctos maritimis'. For further information on this topic I can highly recommend the book 'London Zoo from old photographs 1852-1914' by John Edwards. This is just one of a number of interesting photographic items on offer this month and would make an excellent addition to any collection.
