Description: THE LADY OF SHALOTT (J.W. Waterhouse, 1888) From a story based on the long Arthurian poem by Tennyson, The Lady of Shalott is the iconic painting by Waterhouse. Here, the beautiful and unhappy heroine is captured in her sorrow, holding the chain that moors the boat, symbolic of her impending release from life. The tapestry she weaved in the tower hangs from the side of the boat and she sings her last song, as in the poem. Tennyson told of a woman living in a tower, isolated and lonely, who is cursed to weave her loom without ever looking directly out to Camelot. Instead she sees the outside world only through a reflection in a mirror. But one day a striking knight passes by and sings out, at which the lady stops weaving and abandons her loom. The mirror cracks and her fate is sealed. She descends from the tower and gets into a boat which will carry her to Camelot. She sings until her life is taken by the curse while the boat continues silently to its destination. The bold knight Lancelot breaks through the watching crowd at Camelot and looks upon her face: "She has a lovely face; God in his mercy lend her grace, The Lady of Shalott." www.scenica.co.uk
