Description: Brass On3 Scale 16-ton, Tee-boiler, Two-truck Shay Locomotive – This is a fine example of the model-builder’s skills many years ago when things were really accurately made and where attention to details counted. An example of legendary Japanese quality, this beautifully crafted scale model of a most interesting petite Shay locomotive of only 16-tons. From Tkai of Japan using many lost wax castings by Precision Scale Co. and imported by the highly prized Precision Scale Company, serial number 00267. A beautifully crafted scale model in new condition. Many of these geared locomotives were made by Lima Locomotive Works of Lima, Ohio, after obtaining the original design and permission from Ephraim Shay himself. Shay came up with this idea after noticing that the wooden track used in the forested areas of Michigan was not damaged by the rail cars carrying logs even though they were much heavier than the locomotives pulling the cars. He surmised that smaller wheels (36” diameter) was the difference and his design employed the same size wheel as the flat cars used. Shay was very flexible in their deigns based upon each customer’s needs so that there are many different looking Shay locomotives around – giving the model railroader great creativity in each Shay. This original geared design was patented in 1881 and introduced in The Transportation Exhibits in the World Columbian Exposition of 1893. The last Shay locomotive was made by Lima in 1945. This model is based upon the first engineering redesign from the original patents and were first introduced in 1883-1884 – this older design lasted 23 years until dropped from Lima’s catalogue when the whole line of Shay’s was recast. The Tee-boiler was used on smaller engines ranging from 10 to 20 tons. This typical small Shay was originally built in 1880’s and modernized later including a turbo-generator, newer lighting, air compressor and steam pump, steam brake cylinder, automatic cylinder lubricator, American Steam Guage whistle, larger air tank and two sand boxes behind the water tank. This model has a wooden fence above the water tank for, most likely, wood fuel. All of the many details on the original engine are fully replicated on this exceptional reproduction including bolts, rivets, valve gear, highly detailed crankshaft, main rods, I-beam construction, wooden bumpers, Lima patented coupler pockets and fully detailed cab interior – many of the lids actually can be opened, moving window frames, etc. In logging practice, these locomotives were sometimes, depending upon grades, run uphill facing forward with empty flat cars behind and then, once loaded, was backed down the hill which guaranteed adequate water over the crown sheet. There were grades of 7% or more on many lines. The three-foot gauge, two-truck, two-cylinder design provided a very compact power-plant plus a smaller turning radius allowing for sharper curves in trackage and with reasonable fuel/water capacity for reasonable operating periods in the field. These small Shays were also used for switching and in industrial areas to move rail cars around – sometimes converted to standard gauge for industrial uses. The three-foot gauge, two-truck, two-cylinder design provided a very compact power-plant plus a smaller turning radius allowing for sharper curves in trackage and with reasonable fuel/water capacity for reasonable operating periods in the field. The original paperwork from Iron Horse Models is included which contains much detailed information about this locomotive with original warranty card intact. Over the years the brass finish has developed a beautiful patina which enhances the fine details on this model.
